Celebrating 40 Years of Business Excellence

Celebrating 40 Years of Business Excellence

40 years ago in Richmond, Lansdowne Centre opened its doors; it was called “Lansdowne Park Mall” then. That year Richmond also got a new street address system. A young lawyer named Malcolm Brodie moved to Richmond. The Mayor at the time was Gilbert Blair. It was 13 years before Richmond would be designated a city and 9 years before the Alex Fraser Bridge would connect East Richmond and Surrey.

It was 40 years ago, in 1977, that the Richmond Chamber of Commerce decided it was time to start celebrating Richmond’s growing economy and business community with an annual award: the “Business Excellence Awards”.
That first year, Gerry Culver was awarded “Executive of the Year”, the only award handed out, at the small ceremony. Those early years also included the category “Sportsman of the Year”.

Since then, over 200 awards have been presented to local businesses, newsmakers and non-profit associations. The award nominees in the Young Entrepreneur of the Year category this year weren’t even born at the time of the first awards.

This year, the Business Excellence Awards gala on November 23rd will honour 30 finalists in 10 categories, including categories which would have been foreign to the founders of this event – Innovation of the Year, and Green Business of the Year. Having grown from a small lunch-hour ceremony, the event now hosts over 300 business and community leaders.

While much has changed, the core value of the Awards has remained; take the time to recognize and celebrate the work of exceptional people and their businesses in Richmond.

Community members are invited to join the Richmond Chamber of Commerce at the 40th Annual Business Excellence Awards Gala on November 23rd at the River Rock Show Theatre. Tickets are available for purchase at or 604-278-2822.
